বিএনপির ভারপ্রাপ্ত চেয়ারম্যান তারেক রহমান এখনও ভোটার হিসেবে নিবন্ধিত নন বলে জানিয়েছেন নির্বাচন কমিশনের (ইসি) সিনিয়র সচিব আখতার আহমেদ। তবে তিনি আরও বলেছেন, চাইলে তারেক রহমানের ভোট দেওয়া ও নির্বাচনে অংশগ্রহণ করার সুযোগ রয়েছে।
আখতার আহমেদ জানান, “তারেক রহমান এখনো ভোটার হননি। তবে তিনি আবেদন করলে এবং কমিশন সিদ্ধান্ত নিলে তিনি আগামী জাতীয় সংসদ নির্বাচনে ভোট দিতে পারবেন, এমনকি প্রার্থীও হতে পারবেন।”
সোমবার (১ ডিসেম্বর) রাজধানীর আগারগাঁওয়ে নির্বাচন ভবনে নিজ কার্যালয়ের সামনে সাংবাদিকদের তিনি এসব কথা বলেন।
সাংবাদিকরা যখন জানতে চান— বিএনপির ভারপ্রাপ্ত চেয়ারম্যান তারেক রহমান কি ভোটার হয়েছেন কি না— তখন সচিব বলেন, “আমার জানা মতে তিনি এখনও ভোটার নন।”
পরবর্তীতে তাকে প্রশ্ন করা হয়— তিনি (তারেক রহমান) কি নির্বাচনে অংশ নিতে পারবেন? জবাবে সচিব বলেন, “পারতে পারেন, যদি কমিশন সিদ্ধান্ত দেয়।”
কমিশন কোন আইনের ভিত্তিতে এমন সিদ্ধান্ত দিতে পারে— এমন প্রশ্নের উত্তরে তিনি বলেন, “আইনে আছে।”
এ সময় সুনির্দিষ্ট কোন আইন— তা জানতে চাইলে আখতার আহমেদ বলেন, “আপনারা একটু ভোটার তালিকা নিবন্ধন আইনটা দেখুন, আমার মুখস্থ নেই।”

He was then asked whether he (Tarique Rahman) would be able to contest in the election. In reply, the secretary said, “He may be able to, if the commission decides.”
When asked on what basis the commission would make such a decision, he said, “It is in the law.”
When asked to specify the exact law at that moment, Akhtar Ahmed said, “Please take a look at the Voter List Registration Act; I don’t have it memorized.”
